Nyonya Chicken Curry with Turmeric Rice

I have to say this recipe is one hell of a good detox recipe. I kid. It was an accident. An unfortunate one that leads both hubby and I spending hours camping in toilet :oP. It happened because I misread one of the ingredient used for Nyonya chicken curry. I used 17 bird eye chillies instead of 7 bird eye chillies. By doing so I ended up having a bowl of Indian (or Mamak style) chicken curry instead.

The overall taste was good. Just a little too spicy. That explain why I choose to cook the exact same recipe again- but this time with the right amount of chillis. I've decided to make a pot of turmeric rice with my Toshiba smarty pants rice cooker to go with the Nyonya Chicken Curry. Both dishes compliment one another. I have to say this is one of the best chicken curry I have cooked by far.


Here is recipe for both turmeric rice and Nyonya curry chicken.

Turmeric Rice
2 cup Tesco Finest basmati rice
1/2 lime
2 stalks lemongrass
3/4 tsp turmeric powder
4 shallots, crushed
1 tsp salt
4 cup water

Place all ingredient in a rice cooker. Cook.

Nyonya Chicken Curry
Ingredient A
3 free range chicken breast, cubed
4 potatoes, cubed
2 tbsp soya sauce
3 tbsp flour
1/2 cup water
Salt and pepper

Ingredient B
3 red chillies, 7 dried chillies
100g shallots
25g garlics
3 stalks lemongrass
20g ginger
3 buah keras
1.5 tbsp chilli powder
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1 tbsp curry powder
0.5 tsp five spice
1 tbsp corriander powder
0.5 tsp shrimp paste
1.5 tbsp sugar

Ingredient C
2 stalk curry leaves
4 or 5 kasturi leaves
100ml thick coconut
4cm cinnamon stick
2 cloves
1 star anise
  1. Marinate cubed chicken with pepper overnight
  2. Add 3 tbsp flour, light soya sauce. Mix well. Marinate for another 30 minutes
  3. Place the potatoes in halogen oven (220 degree for 20 - 30 minutes). You may opt to fry the potatoes instead
  4. Bake the chicken in halogen oven for 20 minutes. As usual, you may opt to fry the chicken until half done.
  5. Blend Ingredient B in blender
  6. Heat up oil. Stir fry ingredient B, curry leaves, kasturi leaves, star anise, cinnamon powder and cloves till fragrant.
  7. Add half f the coconut milk and 1/2 cup of water (you may add more later). Bring it to boil
  8. Add chicken and potatoes. Let it simmer for 10 to 15 minutes.
  9. Lastly add in the other half of the coconut cream. Bring it to boil. You may add water depending on the consistency you like.
By the way, the Nyonya curry chicken goes really well with rice noodles as well.
